Random Topic: Round-Up of Spring 2016's Legal Anime UK Streaming List

This is probably the first season where the UK & Ireland nearly got every single anime simulcast without any silly region restrictions. Granted we did lose out on two major shows but overall this was a strong season plus we are even introduced to Funimation's new UK service which is a bonus.

Here's a list of all of the titles made available for UK & Ireland legal streaming from March to June 2016.

Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll is still the main service to go if you live outside North America and they did a really good job for picking up a lot of the shows this season. Pretty much every major show that Funimation haven't licensed ended up with Crunchyroll.

The following titles available for simulcast include:
 - Ace Attorney (Gyakuten Saiban: Sono "Shinjitsu", Igi Ari!)
 - Anne Happy♪
 - The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water (Gakusen Toshi Asterisk) 2nd Season
 - Bakuon!!
 - Big Order
 - Bono Bono
 - Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV
 - Bungo Stray Dogs
 - Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Stride Gate-hen
 - Cerberus (Seisen Cerberus: Ryuukoku no Fatalités)
 - Crane Game Girls (Bishoujo Yuugi Unit Crane Game Girls)
 - Flying Witch
 - Future Card Buddyfight Triple D
 - High School Fleet
 - Hundred
 - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai)
 - Joker Game
 - Kagewani -II- (Kagewani: Shou)
 - Kiznaiver

 - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096
 - Mysterious Joker (Kaitou Joker) 3rd Season

The following catalogue titles made available include:
 - Encouragement of Climb Season 1
 - GOD EATER [Episodes 10-13]
 - Lupin the Third Part IV OVAs
 - Miss Machiko

The following titles delisted:
 - Bodacious Space Pirates (Mouretsu Pirates) |  Expired June 23rd
 - Dusk Maiden of Amnesia (Tasogare Otome x Amnesia) | Expired June 23rd
 - Hakuoki ~ Demon of the Fleeting Blossom Season 3 (Hakuouki Reimeiroku) | Expired June 23rd
 - Inu X Boku Secret Service |  Expired June 23rd
 - Mysterious Girlfriend X (Nazo no Kanojo X) |  Expired June 23rd
 - Queen's Blade Rebellion |  Expired June 23rd
 - Sunday Without God (Kamisama no Inai Nichiyoubi) |  Expired June 23rd
 - Tsuritama |  Expired June 23rd

In terms of simulcasts we missed out on two shows and those two came from Crunchyroll; Haven's You Heard? I'm Sakamoto and Sailor Moon Crystal Season III. The latter was due to Toei Animation's incompetence for not supporting any other regions besides America and Australia. The former however was due to Manga Animatsu, which Jerome acquired the rights from TBS but refused the offer Crunchyroll provided to make the stream UK & Ireland accessible.

Daisuki

Daisuki slowed down a bit for this season with some continuations and an Aniplex title.

The following titles available for simulcast include:
 - The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water (Gakusen Toshi Asterisk) 2nd Season
 - Cardfight!! Vanguard G: Stride Gate-hen
 - Concrete Revoluto: The Last Song (Concrete Revolutio: Choujin Gensou - The Last Song)
 - High School Fleet
 - Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn RE:0096

The following titles delisted:
 - Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation

Funimation

And here we are, with the introduction of Funimation Now. The bad news is that the site is still in construction and as a result we get the 'Beta' version rather than the final product but it's doable for now. The good news is that the catalogue is huge, bigger than Animax and Viewster's but smaller than Crunchyroll. At least the prices are cheaper however.

Most of the catalogue turned up at Day 1 with a few added later on. The shows that got added later on were C3, High School DxD, No-Rin and Tenchi Muyo!'s GXP & War on Geminar. I do think more catalogue titles will be added but it just depends on whether Funimation are saving them until America gets the full list or just holding on to them for no reason.

The following titles available for simulcast include:
 - Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri)

So yeah, that's a lot of titles added for the UK & Ireland in a span of a few months. Netflix have three more anime titles coming to their UK service in July (two of which are Netflix Anime Originals) while Anime Limited have confirmed their titles will be coming to Crunchyroll and Netflix in the future.

My thoughts on some of the Spring 2016 shows I saw

This season I managed to watch about 6-7 shows which is higher than the usual. Just going to give out some quick thoughts on each one.

And you thought there is never a girl online? (Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?)
This show turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Sure it's a harem-ish fanservicey show but I really enjoyed the story arcs, characters and the humour it provided. Not for everyone but it's a solid anime overall. The main female lead is also added to Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax Ignition's post content as a playable character.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond Is Unbreakable (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken: Diamond wa Kudakenai)
This fourth part to the JoJo franchise is awesome. Sure they changed the art style again but it works surprisingly well. Josuke & co. are very likeable characters and the musical references are now everywhere! Well if you're watching this on Crunchyroll you'll notice the translation is different due to copyright reasons but it's not a main issue. The show is still on-going (as it's 39 episodes) but what has been shown so far has been great. The opening song is catchy and cool.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri)
While I've only seen the first eight episodes at the time of this writing, I was very surprised by how this series has turned out. The concept, and the people behind the anime are essentially the same as Attack on Titan but with a different mix to it. The first seven episodes were very good and I love the artstyle that's been used because it's gorgeous to look at. The music is the same as usual for the composer but it has some standout tracks. Now I heard Episode 8 onwards derails the show a lot so I hope it doesn't crash and burns because what I saw was worth picking up on Blu-ray if it ever happens.

The Lost Village (Mayoiga)
This caught my eye due to the weird responses people were getting after watching the first few episodes so I decided to check it out myself. The best way to describe this series is - ehh? It's not a bad thing to say but this is just.. weird and random. It's hard to explain because a lot of weird development occurs in each episode and its humour is random. The CGI is awful I'll admit that but the show overall is average at best. Not bad but not good either.

My Hero Academia (Boku no Hero Academia)
Despite being very cliche and predictable I had a lot of fun watching this series. I knew there was hype built into this series by manga fans but it paid off and I cannot wait for what Season 2 has to offer. Bones did a great job on this series and the main character is solid. All Might is awesome especially with his Engrish. Wasn't a fan of the use of flashbacks in some scenes but that's to be expected with shonen shows.

Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- (Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu)
I originally intended on skipping this show because at first glance on the PV poster I figured it wouldn't be any good at all but after going through the series, this is my favourite in this season. This show does have some cliche'd tropes placed every now and then, and you can tell it's a harem of sorts, but the rest of it is great! Heck it's the story that keeps me invested in watching more and more of the series. The show is animated by White Fox and their record is mostly faithful adaptations (Akame ga Kill! was the only one that didn't turn out well due to lack of material) so I hope it stays strong to the second-cour.

Terra Formars Revenge
And now we have the weakest and most disappointing show of the season. Terra Formars Season 1 was flawed but still had a lot of fun to it thanks to the over-the-top violence and gore. This season not only changed the artstyle but also toned down everything, essentially making it a typical shonen series instead of a seinen. Now the good news is that the story is still solid, it adapts pretty well and ends on a better note than Season 1 did (which ended in the middle of an arc). The new show even added comedic moments which honestly did not work with this show and the OP/ED is very mixed bag (but I liked the second OP called 'The Planet/Hell' I think).

That's it for this season. WE HAVE BERSERK IN JULY! OH SNAP.
