Unboxing [UK]: Shin Godzilla (Blu-ray)

As part of the Christmas Day 2017 haul, I finally get my hands on the latest Japanese produced film in the Godzilla franchise. Really looking forward to this.

Shin Godzilla (Shin Gojira / Godzilla: Resurgence) is a 2016 live-action Japanese film directed by both Hideaki Anno & Shinji Higuchi and produced/distributed by TOHO. This is the 31st Godzilla film and the 29th Japanese film in the franchise. It's also the first Godzilla film to be produced in Japan since Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, and will be the third reboot in the franchise from the Japanese side of the production.

As mentioned the film is a reboot taking place in modern Japan like the others have done. The film was inspired by the 2011 Japanese earthquake and nuclear disasters that had affected the country, plus it makes use of the better technology/special effects modern hollywood now owns. Hideaki Anno took a break from the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series to focus on this instalment (which was a good thing considering Evangelion 3.0 caused a lot of criticism over the direction Anno took it and he pretty much wanted a break).

This movie saw a theatrical release all around the world, from the United States under Funimation to the United Kingdom under Manga Animatsu. While some territories used the name Godzilla: Resurgence during its promotional material, it eventually switched to Shin Godzilla as the official international name outside Japan.

Manga Animatsu's release is a special one as it offers two versions of the film; the original Japanese audio with English subtitles uses the original Japanese on-screen text while the English dubbed version used translated on-screen text. Audiences were passionate over the film so Manga Animatsu responded to the feedback to offer both versions for the release while Funimation only used the translated on-screen text.

The Japanese audio uses 3.1 instead of 5.1 as Hideaki Anno wanted the film to sound more like a documentary. In fact it's worth noting that the Japanese version uses the original theatrical release with the original sound effects, while the English dubbed version uses the home video release with the amended effects.

The discs themselves are region B locked and the subtitles are unlockable in the Japanese disc version. The film is 1:59:49 long in terms of movie length.

You can order the release on Amazon UK for Blu-ray and DVD.
