Unboxing [UK]: Whisper of the Heart (BD/DVD)

The next item is my first order from Amazon and one of my favourite Ghibli films from the studio.

Note that this post has been updated on 18th July 2017 to reflect the current blog format.

Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo Sumaseba) is a 1995 film directed by Yoshifumu Kondo who sadly passed away after the production due to work excess. He was considered to be Miyazaki's successor at the time. Whisper of the Heart is my favourite in the collection, personally I really enjoyed the story and the concept is great. On an interesting note, Kingdom Hearts voice actors David Gallagher and Brittany Snow (Riku and Namine respectively) also voice the main leading characters.

This release from Studio Canal is pretty simple. A standard combo pack with English & Japanese audio with English subtitles plus unlockable subtitles and Region B/2 only compatibility. The DVD discs are also PAL authored. The first run of the Studio Ghibli sets also come with slipcovers plus a number on the spine to match each Ghibli film released. The number isn't the exact release order of the films from Japan but rather randomised until the newer films came along.

Plot Synopsis (via Studio Canal):
Teenage Shizuku has a passion for books and plans to spend her last summer holiday in junior high school reading in the library and translating popular foreign music into Japanese. But her plans are disrupted when she discovers that the same name, Seiji Amasawa, appears on each of the books she borrows.

One day while riding the train, she encounters a mysterious cat who will eventually lead her to the shop where Seiji works as a trainee violin-maker. Shizuku learns that Seiji dreams of one day taking up his craft in Italy, while he encourages her to write. Although their dreams may eventually lead them to very different places, Shizuku and Seiji vow to be true to the strong bond between them.

A masterpiece about the awakening of creative talent, Whisper of the Heart was directed by Hayao Miyazaki’s protégé Yoshifumi Kondo and remains one of the classics of Japanese animation.
