Unboxing [US]: Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine - Complete Series: Collector's Edition (BD/DVD)

The second season to Knights of Sidonia finally got a home release a couple months ago. I had to delay my plan to pick up the set until just recently thanks to Amazon's drop in price.

Also this box set will contain spoilers to the first season.

Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine is the second season based on the manga of the same name. The adaptation by Polygon Pictures used a CGI style approach and I know this put many off with the first season but it was actually pretty good so I'm looking forward to checking out this season. Sidonia is one of the few anime titles to be streamed exclusively on Netflix as part of their Original series line (Polygon's other works are also on Netflix - both seasons of Ajin: Demi-Human and the upcoming 2017 anime films of both BLAME! and Godzilla 2017).

Much like Season 1, Sentai Filmworks eventually acquired the home video rights to the show but its release took a fair bit longer than the first season did. Eventually it made sense thanks to the inclusion of the compilation movie.

The Sentai Collector's Edition offers a fair bit more than its first season box set. The on-disc content will be the same as the standard edition; episodes 1-12 in English, Spanish & Japanese audio with English subtitles plus the Knights of Sidonia Movie Compilation in Japanese audio with English subtitles. Physical goods include a poster, artcards and a small booklet. Subtitles are locked which has been an on-going theme for Sentai and the Blu-ray discs are geo-locked (i.e. will play on UK PlayStation consoles without fault or any player with the country set to United States).

Plot Synposis (via Sentai):
Discovering the nature of one's individual identity is a question every sentient being confronts. Do you only count if you're entirely human? What does it mean to be a person?

In a war with the alien Gauna, capable of absorbing and re-purposing human DNA, these are no longer abstract questions In these uncertain conditions, pilot Nagate Tanikaze finds himself developing an obsession with the Gauna clone of his deceased beloved, Hoshijiro.

Meanwhile, his close friend, Izana, a manufactured non-binary human, goes through an alarming change as their feelings for Nagate grow. Existential and romantic problems will have to wait though, as the Guana step up their attacks and a virtual coup d'état threatens to throw Sidonia's leadership into chaos, while even darker forces stir within.
