Unboxing [UK]: Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ - Part 1: First Print Edition (Blu-ray)

The third major series in the Gundam franchise has finally been released for the UK for the first time. And just like the previous UK Anime Limited sets, this one also has a box.

Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (also known as Double Zeta) is the third series to the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, and is a continuation to the Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) storyline. Double Zeta covers a total of around 47 episodes with another set of new characters in the spotlight. Double Zeta aired in Japan around 1986 to 1987, not long after the release of Zeta.

Much like Zeta Gundam, Double Zeta took quite a while to get released for the UK due to Anime Limited's troubled bad luck. Thankfully Double Zeta was not as bad as Zeta was, with only one or two major delays. In addition Double Zeta is also being released in France under Anime Limited's French branch @Anime, which meant a re-author was required to include French support. For comparison, this part came out around 16 months after Nozomi released Collection 1 of Double Zeta in North America.

Similar to the UK releases of Gundam '79 and Zeta Gundam, the first part includes a box to hold both parts of the show while the second part will include a booklet that will fit in the box. The box and booklet are available to the first 1000 units only so I recommend ordering asap if you wish to own them both. And don't worry, the Blu-ray case this time around doesn't overlap the discs unlike Zeta's release.

As mentioned, Anime Limited had to re-author the Blu-ray discs to include French support. The episode count is actually 25 instead of 22 in comparison to the Nozomi release. Interestingly enough the menu design is way different to both Gundam Movie Trilogy, Zeta Gundam, and Gundam Reconguista in G. If I had to guess it may actually be the Nozomi menu design (though I'll need to double check this, I'll post a screencap of the menu below to let folks who have the US set confirm this). The English and French subtitles are both also white coloured this time around also (the previous Gundam release had Yellow subtitles for the English support). The regions are B only and the subtitles are locked during playback (you can switch subtitles to French during pop-up menu playback).

In addition, as the series was never released during the Bandai Ent. era in the United States, there is no English dub for this release.

Plot Synopsis (via Anime Limited):
It is the year 0088 of the Universal Century. The badly damaged assault cruiser Argama docks at the run-down space colony of ShangriLa for much-needed repairs. While the Argama is in drydock, a young junk dealer named Judau Ashta sneaks aboard in an attempt to steal the Zeta Gundam. He wants to sell it in order to help his sister, but instead he finds himself coerced into joining the Argama's crew. Unfortunately for Judau, the Argama is being pursued by a dedicated Neo Zeon officer named Mashymre Cello.

In order to protect both his sister and himself, Judau must master the Argama's newest mobile suit, the ZZ Gundam.
