Industry News: Section23 Films July 2016 Release Slate

It's that time of month where Sentai Filmworks announce their next batch of anime for home release. Interestingly enough we have no 1 disc subtitle only TV shows on this month, perhaps they finally dropped that controversial move? Who knows.

Anywho, here's the list of anime that Sentai Filmworks have scheduled for the month of July 2016.

For starters, Sentai Filmworks use Geo-locking for their Blu-ray releases. What that means is that the discs are region free but the country code has to be set to United States in order to play the disc. If you have a PlayStation, you can access these without any issue (more info on this here).

In addition, Sentai Filmworks are also releasing a live-action film Arch Angels as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.

So this month we have a mixture of NBCUniversal catalogue shows entering the North American market alongside some streaming titles entering home video.

The last part of Higurashi is now set with the Rei OVAs. I'm looking forward to picking up all of it since it's one of the most notable anime shows out there. Season 1 just got released but for pacing sake I'll wait until Rei is out and then buy them all.

Parasyte's first collector's edition was rather disappointing but this second set is pretty solid this time around. The art is still great as per usual. When it comes to CDs - especially with the original soundtrack, if it's available on its own then I really don't see the point in picking up the collector's set unless the rest of the package was worth buying. Granted I'm curious about the manga part but in all seriousness I can save a lot of money by picking up the standard sets and the CD than the two collector's sets. Same thing with Akame ga Kill!. No Game No Life and Nozaki-kun are special cases as their OSTs were only available in limited form (like the Japanese singles for instance).

Makoto Shinkai's Children Who Chase Lost Voices gets the Sentai Selects treatment. What's interesting about this release is that Sentai is actually giving the Blu-ray format two discs instead of one disc that the original had. The extras all return though I don't know about the commentary part just yet. Still for only $20 SRP that's a good price right there for a film with a combo pack.

Lastly Rin-ne gets the first half of its series scheduled. What's interesting that despite the creator's special background of titles like Ranma 1/2, this series is only going to be subtitle only instead of a dub. Perhaps the show didn't too well streaming wise to warrant a dub.

That's pretty much it for what I have to say for the July line-up. I'm still waiting for Knights of Sidonia Season 2 to pop up.
