Unboxing [US]: Nekomonogatari Black - Tsubasa Family: Limited Edition (Blu-ray)

Next up on the unboxing is another instalment in the Monogatari series. This time set just before Bakemonogatari and released after Nisemonogatari - Nekomonogatari Black.

Note that this post has been updated (16th June 2016) to reflect the new blog format and add additional notes to the release.

Nekomonogatari Black is the third series adapted from the Monogatari light novels and covers the backstory that was briefly explained during the Tsubasa Cat arc (the events of Golden Week) and such we get to see how it happened. Nekomonogatari Black was released as an OVA instead as a TV anime since it was relatively short in contrast to Bake and Nise (4 episodes long at least).

This release is from Aniplex of America which pretty much 75% of the fans in America really hate for one particular reason - the pricing. Nekomonogatari Black gets a rather strange treatment. Like the other two that were released before, Neko Black was released on Blu-ray subtitle only (proper reasoning behind this) and instead of using a chipboard artbox it's a thick cardboard box instead (which seems to be used on every release this year including Anohana Movie, Kill la Kill, Madoka Movies and Monogatari Second Season (this one I can understand since it's one slim case)). I do hope they won't stop making chipboards as other shows would be inconsistent if it ever happened. The discs are Region Free since they're basically Japanese discs (in case you don't know, Blu-ray anime in Japan is region free though the DVDs are R2).

Plot Synopsis (via Aniplex USA):
The story is about an incident that happened before “BAKEMONOGATARI”….

On his way to the bookstore, Koyomi Araragi encounters Tsubasa Hanekawa whose face is covered with a bandage. The incident allows Koyomi to learn what has been happening in the Hanekawa household, but Tsubasa begs him not to tell anyone about it, saying she’ll do anything to keep him quiet.

Without revealing her family’s circumstances, Koyomi tells of the day’s incident - he and Tsubasa buried a “cat” that had been hit by a car- to Meme Oshino. Meme tells Koyomi that he must immediately go to confirm Hanekawa’s safety. He heads to her house, only to find...

So begins the nightmarish nine days of Golden Week...
