Another collector's edition from Sentai Filmworks has arrived and quite an interesting one. Here's an overview of what this special set has to offer.
Knights of Sidonia is a CGI style anime based on a manga of the same name. At first the show somewhat put me off due to its style but little did I know that it's actually pretty interesting from the first episode I saw. The show even gained more popularity when it was announced to be part of the Netflix Original series line-up. After hearing the news that Sentai had gained the rights to the series I decided to wait and get the show since it's clearly a show that deserves my attention.
This Collector's Edition contains the first season on Blu-ray and DVD with a couple of additional physical goods that came with the chipboard box such as a double-sided poster, dozen of artcards, a foilcard and a clear sticker. As for the discs themselves, a lot of people were worried that Sentai would use the same subtitles that Netflix had which for those who didn't know were actually dubtitles. Well there is some good news as the subtitles in this release are proper ones. As for the Blu-ray, the subtitles are locked and since it's one of those geo-locked releases any Blu-ray player can play the discs if the country code is set to America. If you don't have a Blu-ray player that can do that the European PlayStations are also an option. Note the DVD version is for Region 1 players only.

Plot Synopsis (via Back cover):
A thousand years after the alien Gauna destroyed the Earth, a small remnant of humanity still fights on to survive, fleeing on the gargantuan asteroid-based spaceship Sidonia. But centuries of flight and warfare have changed mankind in incredible ways: genetic engineering has allowed humans to photosynthesize like plants, reproduction occurs through cloning, and a third gender has been created to balance the population.
Even though it's been a century since the last encounter with the Gauna, military service is mandatory, with all those able enough enlisted to pilot the Garde robots that stand as Sidonia's front line of defense. For Nagate Tanikaze, whose grandfather secretly hid him in the forgotten bowels of the asteroid, it's a strange new world as he's forced to come to the surface and join the ranks of defenders.
Yet his recruitment comes just in time, for the Gauna have suddenly reappeared, and what could be man's last battle will require every resource humanity has left. And what no one knows, yet, is that Nagate is not exactly what he seems, and a secret buried in his past may change the fate of all mankind!
