Random Topic: My Overall Thoughts/Reactions to Tokyo Games Show 2015 (Part 3)

One of the biggest gaming conventions this year has just ended and it's been one heck of a ride for many video game players. For this post I decided to continue discussing my overview thoughts and reactions to the games revealed and/or detailed at Tokyo Games Show 2015. In Parts 1 & 2 I focused on the games announced at Sony's CEJA conference, and for this final part I wanted to focus on the other games that were also shown off at the expo.

As said in the previous post, if you haven't seen Part 1 and Part 2 I'll link them here.

Attack on Titan

Format: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita (Exclusive)
Release Date: 2016 (Worldwide)

Koei Tecmo's upcoming game is looking pretty damn good. My expectations were curious because we haven't seen a proper Attack on Titan game on consoles (we did see a 3DS game but it's received mixed/bad receptions). But at TGS they unveiled more of the game which provided how the gameplay works and how the players can kill titans. The only thing that somewhat disappoints me with this game adaptation is that the story is only based on the anime version and not the manga. I assume they are planning on adapting more of the story when the second season is out but for now I'm expecting a short campaign.

The date is currently TBA but Koei Tecmo are definitely bringing this over to English territories.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 3

Format: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita (Exclusive)
Release Date: Spring 2016 (Japan & Asia)

Dead or Alive has its moments and now those moments are back with a third instalment in the Beach Volleyball fanservice series. Over the past few months the developers have been making a poll for the fans to decide which character they like the most to appear in the game. The results are rather wild but now they've announced 9 characters who'll be playable in the game.

First place went to Marie Rose (17.6%) who'll receive a PS4 first print costume and second place went to Honoka (14.9%) who'll receive a Vita first print costume. Other characters starting from third place are Kasumi (12%), Ayane (8.4%), Kokoro (8%), Nyotengu (7.6%), Hitomi (5.9%), Momiji (5.1%) & Elena (4.9%). No gameplay was revealed as of yet but the developers will be releasing the game to Japan and Asian territories in Spring 2016. The English releases will depend on fan demand.

Interesting enough, PlayStation VR is apparently in consideration for this game. Exciting, heh.

Final Fantasy XV

Format: PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Release Date: 2016 (Worldwide)

I've been waiting for this game for 10 years. And while the trailer pretty much keeps the hype going, they at least confirmed it's going to be released at some point next year (with a release date announcement in March). But they still revealed a ton of new information which is always good news. They explained the backgrounds for some of the characters including Luna and Noctis' father King Regis, while also considering downloadable content for airships and Gilgamesh as well as multiple languages. They want the downloadable content to be released for free. Various gameplay mechanics were detailed like the lack of double jumps, chocobo racings and fishing.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven

Format: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 (Exclusive)
Release Date: December 17th 2015 (Japan)

MUDAMUDAMUDA. The latest game in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise just unveiled more characters in the roster and some new gameplay. Unlike All Stars Battle the gameplay is more similar to J-Stars Victory Vs. with 2 vs 2 battles (player 1 and an assist vs player 2 and an assist). The roster hasn't been finalised yet but tons of characters are included with many newcomers whom didn't make the roster in All Star Battle making an appearance including Robert E.O. Speedwagon and Rudol von Stroheim! A lot of characters from the first four parts are making an appearance while Parts 7 & 8 are rather unknown. I do wish they will include more characters from those universes as I'm quite curious about those since the JoJo series takes a 'slightly' different approach from Part 7 onwards.

Bandai Namco managed to bring over the All Star Battle so I hope they'll manage to bring this one over.

Persona 5

Format: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 (Exclusive)
Release Date: Summer 2016 (Japan), 2016 (North America & Europe)

Persona 5 is one of my most anticipated games after going through Persona 4 (and currently having a go with Persona 3 FES and Digital Devil Saga). Atlus have been fairly patient with the unveil of this series since we've heard nothing for a while. Many of us figured they'll save the best for last when we thought it would get released in Japan this year, in fact the game has been delayed to Summer 2016 but it's not a bad thing at all!

This game looks way bigger than the previous instalment and it's pretty much a mix between more open-world environments, the best parts of the previous Persona games and Catherine's game engine all put together. The game is looking pretty damn great with some interesting dungeons and anime cutscenes added into the mix. Also the cat just got thrown into the air like it was nothing at the beginning of the trailer heh. I do wonder how the story fits into all this, especially with the main character in prison based on previous trailers and themes.

Atlus have confirmed localisation for North America but Europe is unknown, nevertheless I expect Europe will get their copies not long after.

YU-NO: A Girl Who Chants Love at the Bound of this World

Format: PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita (Currently Exclusive, may appear on PC)
Release Date: February 18th 2016 (Japan)

The last game I want to talk about doesn't have much information but I figured it would be an interesting one to discuss. Back in 1996 there was a visual novel called YU-NO (also known as Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO) which nowadays has become of the most popular eroge titles out there and quite recently a remake was announced. No information was known until just recently when it's been confirmed that the remake will launch on PS4 and Vita. The interesting question is whether the remake will retain the sexual content that the original had if it does end up on PC (a lot of visual novels have eroge content at first or add it in when it hits PC). Obviously due to game laws the console versions are all ages but there's no harm in wondering. If you want to know more about YU-NO, there's a very lengthy article on the game done by Hardcore Gamer that I suggest you read if you're interested (and there's even a fan-translation of the original already available somewhere on the net).

***

And that's pretty much all of the games I wanted to talk about from TGS. It was a great year with some amazing announcements and information unleashed to the public on new and existing titles. The question that many of us will be wondering is whether they'll all get localised in English! Well if they don't, at least the PS4, Xbox One and Vita are region free.
